Lent begins this Wednesday and I have been brainstorming some ideas of what I am going to do in our house for Lent. Last year, I made a purple gabardine runner for our table complete with a crown of thorns (a grapevine wreath from the craft store.) The thing is… since moving, I have no clue where it is. Logic would dictate that it is packed with the Easter decorations, but my life is not usually logical!
As was suggested by Anne (Modern Mrs. Darcy, Anne with an ‘E’) I downloaded 7 by Jen Hatmaker. I started reading it this morning and am about halfway through the introduction. The premise of the story is the 7 month journey the Hatmaker family made to move from a life of excess to a life of simplicity, to better model the teachings of Christ.
Since many people traditionally give something up for Lent (or add something spiritual to their lives,) I am
going to planning on limiting our food options for the 40 days to five food items: quinona, kale/greens, beans, fish, oranges. We’ll see how that goes. To add to our lives, I am going to make a point of attending daily Mass and/or Adoration at least 1/week.
My goal this Lent to do really challenge myself both spiritually and physically… and to really rely on prayer and on Christ when things get tough as I know they will.
What are your Lenten plans?
