This week is INSANE. Hence, the lack of pictures from DD2′s birthday this past Saturday and no menu today. MOPS leadership retreats, PTA, Junior League and Preschool Fait meetings. Plus, it’s really hot and I’m really pregnant. So… enjoy this post from this past February, while thinking cool thoughts and I’ll be back soon!
Right before I sat down to write this post, I was finishing up the last bits of the Valentines for DD1 for tomorrow. Of course, I was inspired by something I saw on Pinterest and I ran with in.
If you haven’t discovered Pinterest, it is an online pin board. You can choose and collect from images around the Internet and group them together however you please. The images are then linked back to the source, be it a blog, a shop or anything else with a web address on the Internet. It is the source of inspiration for photographers, brides planning weddings, decorators, cooks, athletes, crafters, you name it and you can find it on Pinterest.
But then that got me thinking… in this never-ending saga of the “Mommy Wars,” will Pinterest become the new battleground?
If you are a crafty mom, you can take a look at something on Pinterest and easily reproduce it either by sight or by following the directions. If you are a stay-home mom, you also may have the time to actually make the items, especially if you are making 20-30 of the item. So, your little darling gets to go to school with handmade, personalized, unique Valentines to line up against all of the store-bought Valentines and candies, picked up at the last minute. Therefore, the Pinterest Mom is the better mom, No?
We’ve all been given different talents and abilities are we are called to use those talents and abilities to better serve our fellow humans and world. Some people can take a styrofoam ring, some tulle and a hot glue gun and make a holiday wreath for the door. Some people can take fantastic photos. Vincent Van Gogh was an amazing artist (my fav!) and Einstein thought well into the depths of the universe.
As humans, we tend to want to categorize and compare everything, including ourselves. We may not know what goes on inside of a family but we are quick to compare ourselves to what they do and do not do? I am a crafty mom and I happen to be a SAHM and I enjoy Pinterest. But that makes me no better than the working dad who sends his child to school with boxes of Conversation Hearts as Valentines. Or the SAHM who let her son pick out his favorite SpiderMan Valentines. Or the single mom who stayed up making handmade chocolates pops for the class. Why?
Because we all love our children.
